I. POLICY
Central Wyoming College provides certain employees the benefit of paid bereavement leave. CWC is a caring institution and understands that grieving is an individual process and varies a lot from person to person. Employees should not be judged or ostracized about the time it takes for them to grieve a loss.
II. DEFINITION
Immediate family shall be defined as parent/legal guardian, spouse, child/legal dependent. parent-in-law, sibling, sibling-in-law, aunt/uncle, niece/nephew, grandparent, or grandchild.
III. PROCEDURE
1. For the death of an employee’s immediate family, (or other persons that have acted in such a family capacity. These other persons are determined at the discretion of the HR director), eligible employees are entitled to up to five (5) days of bereavement leave without loss of salary; and,
2. For the death of other relatives not specified in this policy, employees may utilize other accrued leave including sick leave.
3. If the employee has exhausted all other leave, they may request a maximum of five days in addition to the days alloted in B1 above from the Sick Leave Bank (see
Procedure 7.5.5 Sick Leave Bank).
C. Requesting Leave
1. Eligible employees request bereavement leave from Human Resources. Documentation, as defined in the associated process for this procedure, is required.
2. Upon HR approval, the college will make bereavement leave available to the employee in the leave reporting system currently in use and outlined in the process associated with this procedure.
D. Use of Leave:
1. Bereavement leave granted in accordance with this procedure must be used by the employee within 24 months of the death for which leave was requested.
2. Employees request use of bereavement leave using the leave request method as outlined in the associated process for this procedure.
3. Use of bereavement leave must be approved in advance by the supervisor.
