This procedure applies to all those who display art on CWC sites and at CWC sponsored events including students, faculty, staff, donors, and others wishing to display art on campus. This includes the CWC Foundation art collection.
CWC supports artistic expression and the college’s use of campus space for artistic displays. All areas of the college premises and facilities used during CWC sponsored events are treated as extensions of the classroom and therefore subject to regulation by the college. The college accommodates the rights, privileges, and preferences of four constituent groups:
- Students who display art in conjunction with their classwork;
- Those who wish to display art and express themselves artistically, i.e., visiting art shows;
- Those who wish to visit the campus to view art; and
- Those who wish to visit the campus for purposes other than viewing art.
PROCEDURE:
A. All works of art that are candidates for public display at the college will undergo a review by the Art Display Committee, in collaboration with the Art Faculty. This committee will review and make art display recommendations to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) who will concur or deny. Decision can be appealed to the President of the College for final determination. No works of art that have not been approved by this process may be placed on public display.
B. The procedure steward will include in the implementing process for this procedure an explicit list of all college facilities that are considered public spaces and thus art displayed in those spaces are subject to prior review by the Art Display Committee. All college facilities not listed in the process are NOT considered public spaces and are not subject to prior review. Individual offices of college employees are not public spaces. Any concerns raised by any individual regarding art displayed in non-public spaces are not the purview of the Art Display Committee nor adjudicated under this procedure.
C. Artwork is judged suitable for display both on aesthetic or educational grounds and on such concerns as safety considerations and the need for unimpeded traffic. Art display guidelines must be included in the implementation process for this procedure.
D. Just as no one is permitted to post notices, erect structures, etc., on college property without prior authorization, no one may exhibit artistic works for public display on college property or at college sponsored events without prior authorization as described herein. Any unapproved work that is displayed is in violation of this procedure, may be considered vandalism, and may be removed without notice by the college.
E. This procedure regulates the public display of art, including public display of student artwork. This procedure does NOT apply to student submissions to the Art Faculty for reviewing and judging the requirements for the student’s course or program.
F. For CWC courses that require public display of student artwork, faculty will review the art display guidelines, the review process of the Art Display Committee, and will include the Art Display Syllabus Statement in all applicable course syllabi.
G. This procedure specifically addresses displays of visual art. It does not directly address the public dissemination of other forms of art. However, the spirit and intentions of this procedure should guide faculty, staff, and students during their involvement in these other forms of expression as well. Should the need arise, the principles articulated herein may be applied to these other forms of artistic expression.
H. The procedure steward will make this procedure and the associated implementing process available on the public CWC website as well as designate appropriate college employees from whom hard copies are available upon request.
I. Theatre and Film student performances and showings will adhere to industry rating standards when advertising events to the CWC community and the general public. Because these rating standards are assumed to be widely understood, this information allows for individual choice to view or not to view the show.
