Part 1.0 Student Health
 
Section 1.10 Wellness Policy Maintenance
 
I. Frequency
  • Compliance to the Wellness Policy will be evaluated annually by the district and school directors at each site.
  • The Wellness Policy will be reviewed triennially (every 3 years) or as required by law. (7 CFR Parts 210 and 220)
II. Annual Evaluation/Education
The annual review will involve the following stakeholders:
  • Executive Director
  • District Compliance Director
  • District Policy Director
  • Food Service Director
  • School Directors
  • PE and Health Department Chairs
The compliance department and/or Food Service Director will initiate a yearly site review and work with the school and district directors to complete the evaluation below. Each school will complete a separate evaluation. (Recommended timeline: October)
 
If the results are not satisfactory, the director will implement changes and then complete a follow-up evaluation. Results of the evaluations will be presented to the Executive Director. (Recommended timeline: January)
 
The District Academic Director will work with representatives of the PE and Health Departments to ensure the curriculum plan meets Utah standards for Health, Physical Education, and Nutrition Education. (Recommended timeline: June)
 
III. Triennial Wellness Policy Review
 
A. Stakeholders
The triennial review will involve representatives from the following stakeholder groups:
  • Executive Director
  • District Compliance Director
  • District Policy Director
  • Food Service Director
  • District Academic Director
  • School Directors
  • PE and Health Department Chairs
  • Instructional Staff
  • Parents
  • Students
  • School Board Members
B. District Evaluation/Policy Review
The district Compliance Director, Policy Director, and Food Service Director will complete an evaluation and review of the school wellness policy by doing the following:
  • Review wellness policies to ensure they are in line with Utah codes; recommend changes that would bring policies into compliance. (Recommended timeline: January)
  • Identify current practices that need to be updated to be in line with policy. 
  • Present policies and practices that require attention to the Executive Director and School Directors during district leadership meetings. (Recommended timeline: February-March)
  • Compile a report to be presented to stakeholders that includes
    • an evaluation of the previous wellness policy
    • summary of compliance since the last triennial review
    • recommended changes to policy and practices
B. Student Review
The wellness policies will be presented to secondary students during 4th period and/or to student government leaders for review and feedback. (Recommended timeline: March-April) 

C. Staff and Parent Review
The committee will send an email to staff and parents to solicit feedback on the Comprehensive Wellness Policies. (Recommended timeline: February)

The compliance team will work with School Directors to schedule Land Trust meetings. School directors, instructional staff, and parents are invited to attend these meetings. Invitations to participate will be sent via email and published in school newsletters. The school Land Trust Committee will review the report, recommended changes, and provide feedback. (Recommended timeline: April)

D. Executive Review
The Executive Director, District Compliance Director, Policy Director, and Food Service Director will incorporate stakeholder feedback and make final changes to policies and practices in preparation for board review and approval.

E. Board Review/Approval of Policy
The Executive Director will present the updated policies to the school board for approval. (Recommended timeline: May)

IV. Documentation
The Wellness Policy will be made available to the public on the school’s website. 

The District Food Service Director will maintain the following internal records:
  • Annual evaluations
    • Site evaluations
    • District evaluation
    • Curriculum evaluation
  • Responses and feedback from parents, staff, and students
  • Triennial evaluation summary report
  • Meeting minutes from land trust and school board meetings
V. Non-Discrimination
American Preparatory Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, or disability. Concerns regarding discrimination may be brought to the attention of a school director and/or to the designated Title VI/Title IX Director.
 
VI. Wellness Policy - Annual Evaluation

District Evaluation
District Nurse
A. Health Conditions
Parents/Guardians of every student report health conditions during registration/re-registration. This information is kept in the Student Information System (Skyward) and provided to teachers and instructors. The school nurse provides specific instructions to staff about students with critical health alerts and individualized health plans.

B. Health Screenings 
Vision screenings are conducted annually in accordance with Utah Code 53G-9-404. Hearing screenings may also be conducted. Parents are able to opt out of either screening.

C. Immunizations
All students are fully immunized, are in the process of becoming compliant, or the parent has completed the vaccination exemption online module. Immunization records are kept for each student. Annual immunization reports are completed on time.

D. Student Medications
The school nurse oversees the administration of student medications according to the policy and procedures outlined.

E. Medical Training
Staff have received required medical training on Epi-Pens, seizures, first aid, head injuries, CPR, and AED.

F. Transitions
Students are given regular opportunities for mild physical activity through transitions to classes and groups between 5 and 10 times per day.

Students will receive nutrition, health, and physical education that meets Utah State Health Education and Physical Education Core Standards.

All students who are able will participate in Physical Education classes according to policy. 

G. Substance Abuse and Prevention
American Preparatory Academy uses an approved evidence-based underage drinking and substance abuse prevention program  as required by Utah law.

H. Parent Education
American Preparatory Academy provides school-sponsored parent seminars that includes substance misuse and prevention, bullying, mental health, internet safety, and the SafeUT crisis line.

All food and beverages sold on campus during the school day (any time before school and 30 minutes after school) will meet the Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards as required by NSLP standards. Each campus can apply for up to 3 exemptions per year, as allowed by USBE.

3. Medical Training
At least two persons on staff are trained and currently certified in First Aid and CPR. All PE and health teachers are First Aid and CPR Certified.

5. Air Quality
The school shall check the air quality index (https://www.ksl.com/weather/airQuality). The school secretary will publish air quality reports. The Director shall determine if inside recess is appropriate when there is a yellow or red air quality day.

6. Student Illness
Teachers send students who are ill to the front office. The front office staff or nursing staff evaluates the student, communicates with the parent, and sends the student home or back to class, as appropriate.

7. Concussion/Head Injury
Students with possible head injury are treated according to policy and procedure.

16. Code of Conduct
The student code of conduct is distributed annually to parents and students. School directors follow the policies and procedures in the code of conduct, including those regarding Banned Items, Searches and Seizures, and School Safety Violations.

17. School Lunch
Elementary students eat lunch in the classroom, where instructors supervise lunch. Each day they have 10 minutes of “chew time” during which students should concentrate on eating their lunch and little conversation should occur.

Secondary students eat lunch in a cafeteria/multi-purpose room with lunchtime supervisors. Microwaves are available to secondary students.

18. Beverages
Students are not allowed to consume the following beverages during school hours: drinks with red dye, soda, or drinks containing stimulants of any kind, including caffeine or herbal stimulants. 19. Nutrition Guidelines

23. Food Provided (not sold) in the Classroom
Food provided to students during culminating activities, as classroom rewards, or Ambassador events held during the school day will meet Smart Snack requirements unless it is directly connected to the curriculum being presented or approved by a director.

24. Celebrating Student Birthdays
In place of cupcakes or other birthday treats, parents who wish to recognize a child’s birthday may do so by providing pencils, erasers, or other minor items for classmates.

25. Holiday Celebrations
Halloween is not celebrated at school. Valentine’s treats must be wrapped, distributed to all classmates, and placed in backpacks to be enjoyed at home. Other holidays are celebrated as it aligns with the curriculum.

26. Food and Beverage Marketing
American Preparatory Academy does not allow third parties to market food or beverages to students during school hours.

27. Recess
Elementary students have access to at least twenty minutes a day of supervised recess, preferably outdoors, during which they will be encouraged to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity.

28. No Screen Time Policy
American Preparatory Academy recommends that families adopt a "no screen-time" policy Monday through Thursday.

29. Walking To/From School
Parents are able apply for student walking passes. Staff evaluates the safety of the walking plan and denies or issues walking passes. Students who receive walking passes are allowed to walk to and from school.
